8021 is an 8xxx-series wrought aluminum alloy with iron as a principal controlled alloying component. In foil form, it is commonly evaluated for applications where a combination of soft temper, forming capability, controlled thickness and stable converting performance is required.
For industrial purchasing, the alloy number alone is not enough to define performance. Buyers should specify the temper, thickness, width, tolerance, surface condition, pinhole requirement, roll configuration and end use.
Buyers comparing different foil grades can also review 8011 aluminum foil , 8079 aluminum foil and 1235 aluminum foil .
The registered alloy composition identifies 8021 aluminum. Batch chemistry for a specific shipment should be checked against the agreed material certificate and purchase specification.
| Element | 8021 Composition Limit | Engineering Note |
|---|---|---|
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.15% | Registered alloy composition limit. |
| Iron (Fe) | 1.20–1.70% | Major controlled alloying component in 8021. |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.05% | Controlled residual/alloy limit. |
| Other Elements — Each | ≤ 0.05% | Per registered composition limits. |
| Other Elements — Total | ≤ 0.15% | Per registered composition limits. |
| Aluminum (Al) | Remainder | Balance of registered alloy composition. |
Temper identifies the metallurgical condition of the foil. The correct temper should be selected together with thickness, forming depth and the downstream converting process.
Annealed, soft condition commonly evaluated where higher ductility and forming capability are important.
Strain-hardened conditions used when a buyer requires a different balance of hardness, strength and forming behavior.
Strain-hardened and partially annealed conditions available for project-specific foil requirements.
Do not select temper only by alloy number. State forming, lamination, stiffness and downstream processing requirements.
Foil buyers often need more than an alloy and thickness. Roll configuration should match the converting line, handling method and finished-product process.
Pinhole behavior becomes increasingly important as foil becomes thinner. Sensitive barrier structures should therefore define an inspection method and acceptance level rather than relying only on alloy designation.
For more information on foil gauge and thickness selection, see our Aluminum Foil Thickness Guide .
State foil thickness, application, laminate structure, acceptable pinhole criteria, inspection method and any reporting requirement.
ASTM B926 pinhole inspection can be discussed where the buyer's specification requires this type of light-table test method.
Final suitability depends on alloy condition, thickness, forming depth, laminate or coating structure, regulatory requirements and the buyer's downstream production process.
8021 foil can be evaluated in applications requiring a soft foil condition and substantial forming during downstream package production.
Confirm temper, thickness, forming depth and laminate structure.8021 can be supplied as a base foil for selected pharmaceutical and cold-form packaging structures, subject to final laminate design, inspection criteria and applicable compliance requirements.
Final regulatory suitability is application-specific.Used as an aluminum layer in converted structures where foil is laminated, coated, printed or further processed by packaging converters.
Surface and pinhole requirements should be defined in the RFQ.8021 may be evaluated as part of selected laminated battery pouch structures where forming behavior is required.
This is different from aluminum current-collector foil used inside a battery cell. For a broader overview of foil end uses, see Industrial Aluminum Foil Uses: Packaging, Insulation, Electronics and Buying Tips .
Documentation requirements differ by application and destination market. Voyage Metal can provide material and compliance documentation according to the buyer's purchase requirement and can arrange project-specific testing when required.
For food-contact, pharmaceutical or other regulated applications, please state the final use, destination market, finished structure and required test/document standard in the RFQ.
These alloys should not be treated as interchangeable based only on price. The required temper, thickness and finished application determine which foil should be technically reviewed.
