6061 is widely considered where a balance of strength, machinability, corrosion resistance and availability is required. T651 plate may be discussed when significant material removal makes residual stress an important purchasing consideration.
6061-T6 is commonly specified for fabricated structures, brackets, frames, supports and transportation components. Final material selection should still follow the drawing, joining process and design requirement.
6061 has useful weldability, but welding changes the local material condition. Buyers should avoid assuming that the as-welded joint retains the same properties as the supplied T6 or T651 base material.
For CNC machining or fabricated parts, send finished blank dimensions, quantity, squareness, edge requirement, machining allowance and any flatness requirement so the supply route can be reviewed before quotation.
